For the third year, ICI partnered with Villa Albertine and the Albertine Foundation to offer travel grants for U.S-based alumni of our professional development programs to conduct research in France. Through the Étant Donnés Contemporary Art Curatorial Fellowship program, Rachel Adams (Curatorial Intensive alum, New Orleans 2016), Naz Cuguoğlu (Curatorial Intensive alum, New Orleans 2017), and Ashton Cooper each received a travel grant to further an ongoing research project and engage with the country’s contemporary art ecosystem.

Villa Albertine supports French-American cultural exchange in education and the arts. The research travel grant is intended to provide curators with expanded opportunities to conduct in-depth explorations of French cultural resources, as well as a forum for the exchange of ideas and knowledge among artists, professionals, researchers, and institutions. The Fellows also receive support from the Villa Albertine team and their connections with professionals in France, by expanding their network of contacts and directing them towards venues, artists, and directors of institutions of potential research interest.

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIPS:

Rachel Adams (Chief Curator and Director of Programs, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts) aims at fostering curatorial practices that engage deeply with contemporary art’s intersection with time, science, and nature. She will conduct in-depth research with artist Noémie Goudal, establishing a critical foundation for a future solo exhibition and accompanying catalogue.

Naz Cuguoğlu (Curator of Contemporary Art, Asian Art Museum in San Francisco) explores themes of intersectional identities and diasporic experiences in her curatorial practice. Her research will align with her upcoming exhibition, Raving into the Future, at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Fellowship research will focus on the intersections of rave culture, sonic worldbuilding, and contemporary art practices within France, particularly among artists from the Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) region and its diaspora.

Ashton Cooper (Associate Curator, Des Moines Art Center) is a curator of modern and contemporary art committed to Queer, feminist, and anti-racist approaches to art historical thinking. The aim of this project is to conduct research on video artists currently working in Paris who explore French colonial histories through time-based media. At the Des Moines Art Center, Cooper plans to devote a year of programming (titled Avant d’oublier: Video Art from Paris) to three individual single-channel solo exhibitions.
