Human Hotel is a hospitality-based residency program that engages private households in New York City to host international cultural workers in need of short-term accommodation. All hosting is done free of charge. In some cases, Human Hotel simply provides the “hotel room” that a visiting artist or scholar could not otherwise afford, thereby making it feasible for them to present their work. Other times, guests are artists coming to town to work on public art projects outside the realm of the gallery space. The mission of Human Hotel is to help artists work better with – rather than around, or apart from – the residents, knowledge, and structures of New York City. The project also advocates for a better usage of economic resources. Right now, local art institutions use up to 1/3 of their budget for international productions on hotel costs. Why not stay for free with Human Hotel – and pay the artists more? Human Hotel is run by Wooloo and is launched at New Museum’s IDEAS CITY in May 2013.
