In 1975, ICI co-founders Susan Sollins and Nina Castelli Sundell united around a shared definition of curating in society, one focused on experimentation, collaboration, and engagement. Over our 50 year history, ICI has recognized that the curator’s role goes far beyond exhibition-making or collection-building: Whether working in an institutional setting or independently, curators bring people together around art to create a sense of belonging, mutual understanding, and critical thinking. They take on a robust community leadership role, bring about new art spaces and scholarship about the art of our times, and act as champions of artists and their legacies. Today, ICI supports a global network of thousands of curators, at every stage of their careers, so that they may achieve their potential as cultural leaders.
In this brochure, we draw from our history of exhibitions and programs to show how the values that guide ICI today have always animated our work. Learn how we champion experimental practice through programs and initiatives like our Curatorial Intensive, empower transformative collaborations in exhibitions from Team Spirit to Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art, and build systems of knowledge sharing that create global, regional, and local connections. In all that we do, we’re most proud of the relationships we’ve built, and how those relationships have had lasting impacts on artistic communities around the world.
