ICI at NADA Miami 2021

Dec 1 – 4, 2021

Miami, FL, USA
Ice Palace Studios

1400 North Miami Avenue
Booth P.01
NADA Miami

At our booth at NADA Miami, ICI premiered our 2021 Limited Edition by Latinx and queer icon Joey Terrill as well as a selection of editions and multiples including the Christo and Jeanne-Claude plate set Running Fence (plates), 2021, originally released as part of Benefit in a Box.

For ICI’s commissioned limited edition, Terrill will produce a work inspired by his emblematic painting A Bigger Piece, c. 2008 from his long-running Still-Life series. Borrowing from Pop art still lifes, and infusing them with queer and Mexican imagery from his Chicano origins, Terrill embeds a blue HIV treatment pill among a Mexican blanket on a tabletop, a sunflower, fruit, and a bottle of liquor to bring the foreign and unfamiliar into a more recognizable domestic space. Terrill shares, “I like to think that I am both expanding the definition of what constitutes Chicano Art and making art about AIDS that doesn’t look like art about AIDS.”

Also available at NADA Miami will be a set of limited-edition plates produced in collaboration with Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s studio. Running Fence (plates), 2021, depicts Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 1976 Running Fence, the iconic installation that ran 24.5 miles through Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, and into the Pacific Ocean. Based on a preparatory drawing from 1972-76, the design runs across a set of three porcelain plates. Running Fence consisted of 42 months of collaborative efforts and the temporary use of the hills, the sky, and the ocean. In its completed form, the monumental artwork existed for only two weeks, and once it was removed, left no visible traces, with all materials given to the ranchers whose participation were crucial to the project’s success. Shortly after, in 1979, Christo and Jeanne-Claude joined the Board of Trustees of ICI, then in its fourth year. Christo continued serving on ICI’s Board until his passing in 2020.
