The Curatorial Seminar in Marrakech brought together Curatorial Intensive Alumni and independent curators to explore topics of cultural translation in curatorial practice. The cohort presented on their own work as it relates to the framing of local practices, regional and international networking, and writing and editing.
Led by peers and mentors, group discussions encouraged a collaborative examination of these issues; and drew from site visits to the 6th Marrakech Biennial. Case studies included two projects presented in the Biennial: Memory Games: Ahmed Bouanani, curated by Omar Berrada, and Ecole de Beaux-Arts de Casablanca, curated by Salma Lahlou and Fatima-Zahra Lakrissa.
The Curatorial Seminar in Marrakech was ICI's second collaboration with Dar al-Ma’mûn, following the Curatorial Intensive in 2015. The Seminar grew out of lasting conversations started during the Intensive, and it drew from Dar al-Ma’mûn's interest and expertise in hosting writers and developing translation workshops.
Mentors and presenters included Omar Berrada (Director, Dar al-Ma’mûn), María del Carmen Carrión (Director of Public Program and Research, ICI), Renaud Proch (Executive Director, ICI), and Julian Myers (Associate Professor of Curatorial Practice, CCA, and Senior Editor, The Exhibitionist).
