Curator’s Perspective: Lucía Sanromán

As part of ICI’s Curator’s Perspective—an itinerant public discussion series featuring national and international curators—Lucía Sanromán will present on her key curatorial projects in 2014.

For her Curator's Perspective talk, Sanromán will be focusing on three specific curatorial projects. First, the bi-national art project inSite − which took place in Tijuana and San Diego from 1992 to 2005 − is the subject of the retrospective inSite: Cuatro ensayos de lo público sobre otro escenario, curated by Sanromán for La Tallera in Mexico (2014). Unique among international exhibitions of a cyclic format, inSite offers the opportunity to understand the evolution of artistic projects that respond to the socio-political construction of place; they also challenge definitions of the public domain, beginning with site-specific installation artworks of the 1990s to ephemeral process-based and performative works created through participation in the 2000s. Secondly, she will discuss the development of the exhibition Citizen Culture: Art and Architecture Shape Policy at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. This exhibition featured 7 case studies of artistic projects that engaged in direct forms of politics through activism, negotiation and lobbying to affect policy and legislative change. Finally, Sanromán will speak about the collaborative curatorial work behind SITElines: New Perspectives on Art of the Americas, the re-formulated Site Santa Fe Biennial.

About The Curator's Perspective

The Curator’s Perspective is a free, itinerant public discussion series ICI developed as a way for national and international curators to share their research and experiences with audiences in New York. These talks provide ICI the opportunity to assemble documentation on and disseminate information about a wide variety of international perspectives on art today. In 2015, audiences will hear perspectives on art, culture, and exhibition-making from curators based in Chicago, Hong Kong, Mexico City, and Munich. Practitioners will talk about what they’re most interested in at the moment, including the artists and the sociopolitical contexts that are shaping practices now.
