Tavares Strachan was born in 1979 in Nassau, Bahamas. He received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied glass, and an MFA in sculpture from Yale University. Recurring themes in Strachan’s work include invisibility, displacement (both physical and metaphorical), and the capacity of both persons and matter to withstand inhospitable environments. Strachan’s work emphasizes the migratory, cross-cultural nature of contemporary artistic production, and unsettles canonized histories and geographies. Most recently, Strachan created his largest work yet “You belong here” neon sculpture for Prospect.3 New Orleans, which moves through the Mississippi on a 140-foot barge. Strachan also received LACMA’s Art & Technology Lab grant that will work in partnership with Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Space X. He was featured at the 12th Lyon Biennale with a series of work titled “The Immeasurable Daydream.” In the summer of 2013, he represented The Bahamas in the nation’s inaugural pavilion at the 55th International Venice Biennale. Strachan lives and works in New York City.
