How can we understand curating as a spatial practice? In this Curator’s Perspective talk, Paula Nascimento—an architect, independent curator, and 2022 ICI Curatorial Research Fellow, currently based in Luanda, Angola—discussed her approach to curating as a geopolitical exercise. In this first part of her talk, Nascimento discussed an ongoing project exploring the practices of three women artists whose lives and communities have been affected by the South African Border War (1966-1989) and its aftermath. The research, centered around the practices of artists Helena Uambembe, Teresa Kutala Firmino, and Tuli Mekondjo, reflects Nascimento's interest in how notions of space and territory shape creative production and reception, particularly in the context of complex entanglements of conflict, migration, trauma, history, and memory.
