2025 Coast Contemporary Research Journey & Assembly

Stavanger, Norway

APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 10, 2025

PROGRAM DATES:
SEPTEMBER 15-21, 2025

Available to curators and arts workers based in Europe.

For the third year, ICI has partnered with Coast Contemporary to share an open call for up to three Curatorial Research Travelers to participate in the 2025 edition of Coast Contemporary.

Coast Contemporary is a nomadic platform for discourse and art that brings together Norwegian and international curators, artists, and cultural workers for a multi-day program of performances, talks, screenings, and a conference program in Norway. Coast Contemporary fosters international exchange between colleagues and prospective collaborators by slowing down and making space for new connections. The venues and curatorial focus change for every edition. Participating artists and curators range in background and experience level, including independent curators and representatives of small, artist-run spaces as well as established institutions.

Coast Contemporary's 9th edition will take place at Velferden Sokndals Arena for Contemporary Art in Dalane, located in the old offices of the Titania mine. Accommodation is booked at Sogndalstrand culture hotel. The program will be followed by a trip to Stavanger city with programmed visits to institutions such as Kunsthall Stavanger, Stavanger Kunstmuseum, and studio visits during OSS–Open Studios Stavanger, a studio festival.

This edition is curated by Tanja Sæter, founder of Coast Contemporary, alongside artists and curators Maiken Stene and Hans Edward Hammonds, founders of Velferden Arena.

Curatorial Concept

If artists are society's canary in the coal mine, it's safe to say that the air in 2025 is starting to feel a bit thin.

Mutant is the perspective and the starting point for this year's artistic focus—something in flux that has become or may become stronger as a result of wanted or unwanted change. If this is collaborative research, adaptation/adoption, transmigration, Alchemy, a movement, materials, writing, food, sound, (non)humans, nature, ecology, politics, parenthood, science fiction, the positive/negative remains to be seen.

The program is under development and will consist of art, a conference, walks, conversations, presentations, installations, travel, food, performance, and sound. We are deeply invested in bringing people together for conversations and exchange of experiences and perspectives.
