Videotage Artist Roundtable: Micro-revolutions in a Floating City
Thursday, January 24, 2013
6:30–8pm
TEMP Art Space
57 Walker Street
New York, NY 10013
With Hong Kong artists Lo Chun Yip, Linda Lai, and Cheng Yee Man, moderated by Nevena Ivanova
The new Hong Kong additions to the exhibition Living As Form (The Nomadic Version), currently on view at the ICI Curatorial Hub @TEMP, will be discussed in depth during this roundtable discussion. The curator Nevena Ivanova will introduce the concept behind the selection of the 14 activist interventions in Hong Kong, and three of the participating artists will reveal some detail behind their creative process. In particular, Linda Lai will discuss video art as an anthropological and historical tool and its significance in the cultural and economic environment of Hong Kong. She will focus on the aesthetic approaches of video artists such as Lo Yin Shan and Anson Mak. Lo Chun Yip will talk about the urgency to document political protests and social activities, as well as the importance of the video tool to give voice and shape to these events and to expose their underlying connection and direction. He will elaborate on the specific aesthetics behind such documentaries. Cheng Yee Man will present the activist movement in Hong Kong, which has been gaining momentum in the last 10 years. He will focus on the guerrilla events organized by Woofer Ten, C&G, and Parallel Lab. After the artists give their presentations, there will be a roundtable discussion.
The event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP to rsvp@curatorsintl.org with Videotage Roundtable in the subject field. For questions, contact Misa Jeffereis at misa@curatorsintl.org.
This program is supported by the Arts Development Fund of the Home Affairs Bureau, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
