In this closed-door conversation among curatorial colleagues in culturally-specific New York museums, participants will discuss their specific strategies and program objectives for their museum’s exhibition program. What role should art and exhibition-making play in constructing a narrative of ethnic communities? How should exhibitions be conceptualized to engage these communities as well as reach new audiences? What is the future for museums that represent marginalized communities in light of the current popularity of museums as tourist/entertainment sites? The goal of this session is to share ideas for moving forward with more agency and innovation in this work.
Participants include Herb Tam (Curator and Director of Exhibitions, Museum of Chinese in America), Lauren Haynes (Assistant Curator, The Studio Museum in Harlem), Hitomi Iwasaki (Director of Exhibitions, Queens Museum of Art), and Michelle Yun (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Asia Society Museum).
