Michael Wellen is Chief Curator at the Hammer Museum at UCLA, Los Angeles. Previously he served as senior curator of international art at Tate Modern from 2016 to 2026, where he organized and curated numerous exhibitions including solo exhibitions of Ana Mendieta (2026), Philip Guston (2023), Lubaina Himid (2021), and Takis (2019). Before moving to the UK, Wellen was Assistant Curator of Latin American and Latino Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where he co-curated Antonio Berni: Juanito and Ramona (2013) and Intersecting Modernities: Latin American Art from the Brillembourg Capriles Collection (2013). He received his Ph.D. in art history from the University of Texas at Austin in 2012, where he specialized in modern and contemporary art, criticism, and Cold War cultural exchanges between Latin America and the United States.
