Paula Tsai has held an integral role in building and shaping Gladstone’s presence in Asia since joining the gallery in 2015. Previously, Tsai held the position of chief curator at UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. As a partner at the gallery, Tsai's leadership has been pivotal in various initiatives in Asia, including spearheading the successful opening of Gladstone’s first outpost in the region in 2021 with a location in Seoul, and cultivating a strong presence in China through gallery and institutional exhibitions. Tsai’s extensive expertise and profound engagement in the art world have been crucial in cultivating strong relationships with artists, museums, and collectors in the region. She has also been instrumental in the development and guidance of artists’ careers and institutional relationships across Asia, strategically ensuring increased exposure in exhibitions, acquisitions in public collections, and growth of the gallery’s primary market. This deep understanding of the art landscape and market in the region has been critical in extending the Gallery's reach and impact globally. In 2024, Tsai played a significant role in the recent addition of Chinese artist Hao Liang to Gladstone’s roster. During her tenure at Gladstone, Tsai has also worked closely with the artist Rirkrit Tiravanija and the estate of Huang Yong Ping. Working closely with the leadership team, Tsai directs Gladstone’s programming in Asia and oversees the gallery’s marketing and communications strategies.
