Dr. Jordan Amirkhani is an art historian, educator, and writer, based in New York. She is the Artist Programs Manager, Artist Legacy and Engagement, at Joan Mitchell Foundation, where she leads the design and implementation of programs that support artists across their careers. Before joining the Foundation, Jordan was Curator and Head of Research and Project Development at Rivers Institute for Contemporary Art & Thought—a non-profit organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana committed to the exhibition, research, publishing, and convening of art and artists of the global diaspora. Prior to her work as a curator and arts administrator, she also held academic positions at American University in Washington, DC, and the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, TN.
Jordan has published academic scholarship and monographic essays on the work of historical and contemporary artists such as Tina Girouard, Helen Cammock, Wendy Red Star, Sheida Soleimani, and many others, and her writing has been featured in a variety of national and international publications, including The Paris Review Daily, Artforum, Art in America, Baltimore Arts, Boston Art Review, X-Tra, Mousse, and Burnaway.org. Her emphasis on contextualizing contemporary art and artists working in the American South garnered her a Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation “Short-Form” Writing Grant in 2017 and three nominations for The Rabkin Prize in Arts Journalism.
Jordan holds a Ph.D. in the History and Philosophy of Art from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom, an M.A. in Art History from The George Washington University, and a B.A. in Dance Performance and Art History from Birmingham-Southern College.
