Their name has become synonymous with serial photography. Hilla and Bernd Becher met in art school and, as a duo, they began documenting iconic yet obsolete objects of German industrial architecture and design. They captured dozens of water towers and grain silos, gas tanks and warehouses—or this coal mine pipe—each a unique structure of a time past, with a striking attention to design.
