For many curators, the artist’s studio visit is a lynchpin in any curatorial project. By entering into an artist’s space, curators can not only see finished work and pieces in progress, but understand that artist’s practice in the context of the things that inform their work—their interests, research materials, obsessions, collections, sources of inspiration, and points for further connection and collaboration. The Backroom opens up the studio visit to showcase the people, ideas, and relationships that make artworks possible by presenting artists’ studio materials in exhibition form. This continuous, relational exercise is available through a digital space initiated by and realized in partnership with Museo Tamayo, Mexico City.

Each iteration of the project invites a series of guest curators, selected by ICI and Museo Tamayo, to open the doors to artists’ “backrooms” and craft a space that shows how art works in continual exchange with the world that surrounds it. Every two weeks of the series, one curator presents three artists of their choice, showing what nourishes and informs each of their practices—including objects of desire, personal archives, libraries, artistic research, music, routines, films, books, stories, and more. As the digital space evolves, the site’s structure bends to incorporate new types of media and new ways of co-creating knowledge.
