The Backroom

Curated by Andrea Valencia Aranda, Laura August, Jaime Ruíz Martínez, Humberto Moro, and José López Serra

The Backroom is a digital space to discover and navigate art beyond the artistic object or artifact, from a perspective that art is a continuous and relational exercise.

Every two weeks from September 2020 to March 2021, guest curators will be presenting what nourishes and informs the practices of three artists of their choice: objects of desire, personal archives, libraries, artistic research, music, routines, films, biographies; art is in a permanent exchange with the world that surrounds it.

Initiated in 2005 by Magalí Arriola, Kate Fowle, and Renaud Proch, this research project brings together videos, music, photographs, ephemera, anecdotes, or any action or artifact that feeds the artistic practice of creators from various disciplines. This new digital edition of The Backroom was initiated by and realized in partnership with Museo Tamayo, Mexico.

Artists: Gloria Anzaldúa, Ramón Miranda Beltran, Tom Burr, Isa Carrillo, Binna Choi, Margit Czenki, Galia Eibenschutz, Faivovich & Goldberg, Priscila Fernandes, Natalia Lassalle-Morillo, Jorge Méndez-Blake, Yos Piña Narváez, Javier Orfón, Marjetica Potrč, Ika Putranto, Mathew Rana, Nibia Pastrana Santiago, Christoph Schäfer, Barb Smith, Karina Aguilera Skvirsky, Ana Tiscornia and more to come.
