Aaron Leon is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in lens-based art, from Secwepemcúl’ecw and a proud member of the Splatsin community in the Secwépemc Nation. Raised in the town of Armstrong, BC, Leon holds a BFA with a major in photography from Concordia University. He oversees the media requirements of the Language and Cultural Program at the Splatsin Tsm7aksaltn (Splatsin Teaching Centre) Society. As a descendant with roots in both the Secwépemc and settler communities, Leon draws inspiration from Secwépemc history while exploring diverse modes of representation. In addition to his artistic practice, Leon is pursuing a master’s degree in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies program at UBC Okanagan. His research centres on Secwépemc histories and stories, with a goal of exploring ways Indigenous people can preserve and protect knowledge in the digital age, while upholding principles of responsibility, respect and reciprocity in the digital realm.
