Steve Cannon is a poet, playwright, novelist, and retired professor from the City University of New York. In 1991, he founded A Gathering of the Tribes, an arts and cultural organization dedicated to excellence in the arts from a diverse perspective. Cannon encouraged the exchange of alternative points of view traditionally overlooked by mainstream media. The ideas raised in the discussions served as inspiration to the writing later published in A Gathering of the Tribes magazine. Steve Cannon has been instrumental in the founding of numerous Lower East Side and East Village cultural institutions, such as the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, the Lower East Side Arts Festival, the Howl Festival (of which he is the is Poet Laureate), and the Nuyorican Poets Café.
