Hiuwai Chu is a Chinese American curator based in Barcelona. She is the Head of Exhibitions at MACBA, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, where she has worked since 2007 as both curator and assistant curator. She has curated exhibitions by artists including Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Bouchra Khalili, Lydia Ourahmane, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané, Akram Zaatari, among others, as well as thematic exhibitions such as Undefined Territories: Perspectives on Colonial Legacies. She is currently part of the curatorial team for Tondra, a new initiative by the Samdani Art Foundation of artwork commissions by Bangladeshi artists.
Chu serves on the advisory board of Cordova, an independent curatorial project based in Barcelona. Previously, she was on the board of Hangar, a center for research, production, and artist residencies, and the editorial board of L’Internationale Online. She is the co-editor of Climate: Our Right to Breathe (K. Verlag, 2022). Before moving to Barcelona, she was associate editor at the Aperture Foundation in New York. She studied anthropology at Barnard College,
Columbia University.
