Phokeng Setai joins the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Young Curators Residency Program

On Mar 20, 2024

Madrid, Spain

This year, ICI partnered with the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo to open their 2024 Young Curators Residency Program (YCRP) to an alum of our Curatorial Intensive. We are so excited to announce that Phokeng Setai (Curatorial Intensive alum, Cape Town 2019) will be participating in the intensive research residency in Madrid! Through the year-long YCRP, Phokeng will join an international cohort of three young curators to conduct in-depth research and work closely with local artists and partners as well as the Fondazione’s team. Setai is an independent curator based in South Africa whose interest is in African and African Diaspora artistic modes of knowledge production, with a specific emphasis on curatorial practice as an expanded field of intellectual inquiry and creative expression.

Divided into several stages, the Young Curators Residency Program Madrid will first take the three curators to visit art centers, museums, galleries, foundations, independent spaces, and artists' studios in cities across Spain. The cohort will then engage in extensive research that weaves the artistic fabric of the Spanish context in with their personal curatorial practice. The results of their research, which will continue over the coming months, will be shown in an exhibition that will open at the Ateneo de Madrid in June 2025. For the second year, art collective hablarenarte will coordinate the program and connect the curators to local resources to advance their practice.

This is the fifth edition of the YCRP Madrid, which follows the model of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo's program in Turin, Italy, where it has been held since 2006. The YCRP seeks to develop the professional and critical skills of young curators and further the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo’s commitment to the national contemporary art as well as its engagement with emerging curatorial practice. The Madrid edition also promotes and supports Spanish contemporary art and its internationalization by providing opportunities for young curators to come into contact and work with Spanish artists, and creates networks between young professionals in the sector while highlighting the figure of the curator within the artistic scene. Reale Foundation has supported this initiative since its first edition and reaffirms its commitment to young, diverse and intercultural talent.
