The Mumbai Curatorial Intensive, developed and implemented by Independent Curators International (ICI), is offered in Mumbai (India) in collaboration with the Mohile Parikh Center (MPC), Mumbai.
This 3–day Intensive, for 15 applicants selected by ICI and MPC, offers a forum on curatorial practice focused on contemporary art and geared toward the emerging professional curator. The program provides participants an introduction to the field of contemporary curatorial practice today, and the opportunity to set up a foundation for future curatorial work. Participants engage with current curatorial thinking in a critical environment that provides an international context for understanding contemporary art and exhibition making today.
The Mumbai Curatorial Intensive consists of 2 days of seminars, during which the selected participants attend closed-door lectures and discussions with experienced curators from ICI, and other prominent professional curators invited from Asia and Europe. On the final day a public forum of 2 panel discussions is held, with professional curators from Asia, Europe and North America, who give talks on pressing issues for contemporary curators.
This event develops directly out of the successful prior collaboration, “What Is Curating?” an intensive hands-on series of workshops organized by ICI and MPC in December 2010. These events fill a gap in the Indian contemporary art world, where despite an active art scene, no formal long-term academic training programs exist.
Admission to this course is by application process. Each candidate must submit:
1. A 500-word description of why you would like to participate in the Curatorial Intensive and how you think it will benefit your work.
2. A 500-word description of your current and past experiences in curating exhibitions or working in a gallery or museum environment. (e.g. internships, installation experience, etc).
3. A resume.
4. Briefly address the following questions. Each response should be no longer than 2 paragraphs:
a. How do you find out about what’s happening in the art world locally, nationally and internationally?
b. What resources do you regularly employ to stay informed on current developments in the field? (e.g. what particular websites, institutions, individuals do you look to?)
c. What topics or issues in curating contemporary art would you like to understand further?
Fees & Scholarships
The full program fee is 600 USD. Out of the 15 participants, 7 will pay the full program fee. ICI and MPC will select 4 participants to receive half-scholarships (3,000 USD) and 4 participants to receive full scholarships, which will waive the program fee. The scholarship recipients will be selected through the responses in their applications, and thus will receive the award based on merit rather than need.
