An exhibition about doing and refusal at Tallinna Kunstihoone...
Guest Curator Margit Säde has invited 20 artists and groups from around Europe and two artist-run spaces from Estonia to investigate what lies between refusal and doing, the script and the live moment, interpretation and judgement – imagined ideas and actual situations. Departing from the previous installation of do it at Tallinna Kunstihoone in 1997, this version of do it, subtitled DOings & kNOTS, was initially planned to be about following instructions in art. However through the planning process, this iteration of do it emerged as an exhibition about the impossibility of following instructions, rules, or any given formula.
In one way or another, the works shown in this version of do it still take an instruction as a starting point, either by actively employing one, by inviting visitors to participate or simply by activating an image with text. A selection of 20 instructions from do it are gathered together in a single room. In contrast to the more productive instructions found in do it, the instructions included here focus on deceleration and contemplation.
