Independent Curators International (ICI) supports the work of curators to help create stronger art communities through experimentation, collaboration, and international engagement. Curators are arts community leaders and organizers who champion artistic practice; build essential infrastructures and institutions; and generate public engagement with art. Our collaborative programs connect curators across generations, and across social, political and cultural borders. They form an international framework for sharing knowledge and resources — promoting cultural exchange, access to art, and public awareness for the curator’s role.
Mobile Museum of Art
Mobile, Alabama, United States
January 26, 2018 - July 25, 2018
For Mobile Museum of Art (MMofA), mounting do it means engaging the local creative community. MMofA is enlisting artists, individuals, and community groups to interpret and complete selected works out of 250+ possible instructions. This is a huge opportunity not only for local artists, but also for our museum to show works originating from contemporary art’s master class. The educational and programmatic value of do it is limitless in its inclusiveness and artistic caliber.
The exhibition do it is able to bridge the gaps between past, present and future by sustaining an ongoing open dialog. Aside from the opportunities within the creative process, the exhibition itself is a meditation on the nuances of human interpretation and the passage of meaning through multiple hands. Almost none of the work in the exhibition is static, each work changes or evolves over time and so the exhibition itself is heavily interactive, giving new meaning to an “Exhibition in Progress.”
