THE LEO AWARD
With the Leo Award this year, ICI recognizes Emily Pulitzer, a firm believer in the power of art and the civic role of art institutions.
In awarding this year’s Leo, ICI reflects upon the importance of regional leadership in the arts that brings communities together and connects them to ideas from around the world. Mrs. Pulitzer’s belief in the power of art and architecture, and the civic role of art institutions to help inform our understanding of the world, is evident in the vision behind the Pulitzer Arts Foundation.
Mrs. Pulitzer began her career as assistant curator at Harvard’s Fogg Art Museum, and moved to St. Louis to become curator at the Saint Louis Art Museum. She serves on the boards of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and the city’s Grand Center Arts District. A long-time member of the Museum of Modern Art’s Board in New York, she was named a Life Trustee in 2011. Furthermore, she is deeply involved in the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, where she serves as President of the Board of Directors.
THE INDEPENDENT VISION CURATORIAL AWARD
Established in 2010 as an initiative of the Gerrit Lansing Education Fund, the Independent Vision Curatorial Award reflects ICI’s commitment to supporting international curators early in their careers who have shown exceptional creativity and prescience in their exhibition-making, research, and related writing.
The 2018 Independent Vision Curatorial Award honoree is Merve Elveren. The final selection was made by Wassan Al-Khudhairi, Chief Curator of Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, who will present the award at ICI’s Annual Benefit & Auction.
Of the selection, Al-Khudhairi noted: “Merve Elveren’s work has shown a dedication to the artists living and working in Turkey today. Her work at SALT helped to define new models for contemporary art in the country, through a thoughtful, research-based methodology. Her practice brings feminists, anti-militarists, LGBTQI activists and human rights defenders into the art historical narrative.”
