Independent Curators International (ICI) supports the work of curators to help create stronger art communities through experimentation, collaboration, and international engagement. Curators are arts community leaders and organizers who champion artistic practice; build essential infrastructures and institutions; and generate public engagement with art. Our collaborative programs connect curators across generations, and across social, political and cultural borders. They form an international framework for sharing knowledge and resources — promoting cultural exchange, access to art, and public awareness for the curator’s role.
Patrick Hunkeler was born in 1970 in Switzerland, and has been living in South Africa since 2011. He is a scout for a collection of art in South Africa. The aim of this Mamule Collection is to identify contemporary young African artists and to provide them with a platform in Europe. Previously he lived in Zurich, where he worked for five years as manager of the cultural café at the ETH Zurich. In 2003 he began training as a cultural manager, and he completed his studies at the end of the year. He worked as a journalist for almost two years for the Tagesanzeiger and SmartMedia. Nearly three years ago, the project for the collection of contemporary African art started.
